Heaven and Hell – Radio City live Music Hall (acima); Materiais autografados por Bill Ward (abaixo)

Somente a versão regular.
2. Black Sabbath – Live at Hammersmith
3. Heaven and Hell – Radio City live Music Hall

Você costuma frequentar shows?

Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osborne e Glenn Hughes.

OK.

Quando me aproximei da banda, eu me ajoelhei três vezes, dizendo “Perdoem minha estupidez; OBRIGADO, OBRIGADO, OBRIGADO”.

“Venha … venha aqui!”, Tony me respondeu.

Postcards do Sabbath, fase Heaven and Hell

Agora, qualquer coisa de Heaven and Hell a Forbidden e The Devil You Know é a perfeição para mim. No fim, tudo é bom.

English version

Allen Khamou is not a common Black Sabbath’s fan. It has great stories with the band, a beautiful collectio and appreciates all the eras of the set that made history, being the inventors of Heavy Metal. In our interview, the Iraqi who lives in the United States, tells us about his collection, his favorite items, rare, among others. A very funny conversation that shows a great collector of the Birmingham quartet. Get to know Allen Khamou’s collection.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.  Start telling us about you, what you do for living, your hobbies, where do you live, etc.

You’re welcome, thanks for having me, I’m honoured to be here. I am originally from Baghdad Iraq and I have been living in Michigan USA for the past 22 years. I work for Coca Cola where I stock soda in market shelf for customers physical job not a lot of fun but I kind of like it and it pays the bills. My hobbies are music, Football as I am a huge Brazilian National team fan, I also like watching movies Bruce Lee especially and Arnold, I like millions in the world also love traveling as long as I can afford to do it.

What’s your first memories listening to music, and what turned you a collector?

I kind of remember my sisters back home when I was still a child hearing them listening to the Bee Gees and Demis Roussos and the 70s disco music, then when I started growing up in the 80s my 2 cousins introduced me to 80s pop music and around Christmas 1990 one of them had just started listening Iron Maiden and so that was my introduction to Heavy Metal, I don’t know about calling myself a collector as i don’t fancy myself as a collector it’s just that once I like something I try to get into it by knowing as much as I can about it, and once I start liking it that’s when I start buying as much related stuff to it, sorry if I didn’t get this part quite right.

How do you organize your time to do every stuff that a collector does (listening to your material, searching for new items, etc)?

There’s really not much that I do here other than when I get home from work, I try to make the most of it before going to bed, I put a CD or an LP and try to enjoy the rest of the day, I also do this when I’m cleaning, and doing some homework ad since I’m a single I have more time to do this, as for research I now check news on Facebook before I used to google the stuff to see when or where can I get the stuff from.

What are the main formats you have in your collection? How many items of each format?

429 CDs
150 LPs

How many records do you have in total?

Total of everything 579

How your friends and family see your hobbie as a collector?

My friends that are in this hobby likes it, but the majority of my family thinks it’s a waste of money and some of them even they make fun of it and me as well, but I don’t care.

What do you think about the return of the vinyl with force in recent years?

It’s really a great thing, I always wanted one n the past but I used to live in apartment and was moving a lot so didn’t want to drag that thing with me, now i regret it as many of the records I would like to have no are out of print and I wish if the stuff that is out of print will become available once again, I also wish if Technics brings back their legendary 1200 SL turntable back, rather than what they did by releasing a new super expensive turntable.

How old were you when you bought your first record, and what was it? Do you still have it?

Oh Man…that’s a tough one, let’s say I was 16 years old, I don’t remember but I know for sure it was some pop music cassette, unfortunately I don’t have it. But I can tell you what was my very 1st CD I ever bought, GZR – Plastic Planet, I still have it and it was signed by none other than the great Lord Geezer Butler during that tour.

When did you realize you were going to become a collector?

Again I don’t fancy myself a collector but If you’d like to call me that then I’d say when I actually made it to the USA because back home was almost impossible to find original copies.

Which artists / styles predominate in your collection?

Black Sabbath for sure and anything related to “Dio- Rainbow- GZR, except Ozzy solo work as I’m not a fan I only have Bark at the moon in Japanese Mini LP and some greatest hits which included tow unreleased Black Sabbath songs from the early days”, Iron Maiden, Phil Collins/Genesis, Julio Iglesias, and Jean Michel Jarre

What are the rarest albums you have?

Another tough question…well at the moment aside from the stuff I have signed by Bill Ward, and Glenn Hughes, I can think of 3 LPs that I have hardly seen coming by, they’re not that rare but 2 are hard to find at normal price and one is rarely hard to find:
1. Julio Iglesisas – Tango LP which was only released in Colombia however there’s a limited 600 copies numbered but I don’t have that one I have a regular version.
2. Black Sabbath – Live at Hammersmith LP
3. Heaven and Hell – Radio City live Music hall LP

Why you choose Black Sabbath to be your number one band?

Long story short TONY IOMMI, when I first saw a picture of the man my jaw dropped, he looked like someone from the middle east rather than British at least to me cause I’m originally an Assyrian and I felt that he looked like an ancient Assyrian man, and the more I heard his work the more I loved the man.

How did you get so many imported products, especially the Japanese?

eBay of course.

Do you go to shows often? How many Black Sabbath shows did you go to?

Oh yes, whenever I am in the mood to go for, and whenever I have the chance, I’ve been to 7 Black Sabbath shows”
1999 Reunion tour 2 nights back to back, 2001 Ozzfest, 2008 Metal Masters ((Motörhead/Testament/Judas Priest/Heaven & Hell)) with our beloved late and great Ronnie James Dio ” My Favorite Black Sabbath show ever cause it was unfortunately the only time I did get to see them with RJD live” even though they toured under the name Heaven & Hell. The 13 album tour, The End Tour Feb 19th “Iommi’s Birthday 2016” and August 31st 2016.

And with artists, have you had the opportunity to talk to someone you know? If so, which ones surprised you most positively and negatively?

Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osborne, Glenn Hughes.
OK..with the Artists I’ve met, nothing was negative everything was positive. I’ve always known that Bill Ward & Glenn Hughes were class act through people who mentioned this over the years especially when you hear Ronnie James Dio RIP always talk about Bill Ward and how much he loved him, I noticed that when I met Bill back in 98 how gentle and classy the man was, I told him about how I was kicked out of the house because my family thought Black Sabbath & Metal music was Satanic, and he told me this: Sorry to hear that but you should have not angered your family over this matter and hopefully things will get better for you with this issue. With Geezer Butler who was the 1st Black Sabbath member I met back in 96 during his solo album Plastic Planet, he was very quiet, yet funny and humble as well, I told him where I’m from and he was sort of surprised and happy to know that some people from where I come from knows about Black Sabbath. Now in 1998/99 there was a sort of meet & greet signing Reunion album at a famous record store back then that does not exist now it was called “Harmony House” I stood in line along with my nephew for about 5 hours to meet the original 4 Black Sabbath members, till it got late where we were told the band had to leave and they cannot stay any longer, however we were handed a promo photo signed by them.
2016 on Feb 19th which as we all know is Tony Iommi’s birthday I had a meet & greet package ticket during The End Tour, which was another very special show because the crowd including me got to sing a Birthday Song for Lord Iommi 🙂 and before that during the meet & greet I was wearing a leather Jacket with all the patches of the Black Sabbath studio albums along with “Live Evil” patch, when I approached the band I bowed down three times saying “Pardon My Stupidity; THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU” everyone in the room from Tony, Geezer & Ozzy and staff members were happily laughing and I remember Tony saying this when he caught my jacket: Oh My God You Got it All.

So I made sure to say these words loud and clear in that room as most of the staff if not all were Sharon Osborne staff “which I can’t express how much I despise that woman” So I made sure that everyone was going to hear these words because to me Tony Iommi = Black Sabbath where as many people unfortunately have this stupid thing with all my respect called “NO OZZY, NO SABBATH”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so as I after I got up from kneeling to the Gods I said this to Tony: I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH TONY FOR KEEPING THE BLACK SABBATH FLAG FLYING ALL THESE 46 PLUS YEARS REGARDLESS OF WHO WAS IN THE BAND, THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR AND GOD BLESS YOU.
The man replied laughing with a joyful look on his face saying to me: Cheers mate, cheer. While Ozzy grabbed me during the picture session saying: What was that thing you did I thought you was bending over or something hahahahaha.
I said to him: Sorry Ozz I couldn’t Help it.
He grabbed and tapped my shoulder after he looked on the back of my jacket saying with a big smile on his face: Come here.
As you can see the man always finds away to be funny and crazy as he’s known for 🙂

August 21st 2016 I met Glenn Hughes during his US Tour which was supposed to be in March but was pushed due to his knees replacement surgeries. Glenn is such a sweet guy, super friendly and way too humble, I spent about maybe 10 minutes talking to him telling him where I’m from and he was super exited to hear my stories and he signed everything I have of him including Bootlegs, when I showed him my 8th Star Silver pressing bootleg copy which later as we know was released as “Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes – The DEP Sessions” I said to him: Sorry for having this and you don’t have to sign it, he stopped me by saying: Why are you sorry?
I said: Well I know Tony would not be happy to see this with me.
He said: Look; I had nothing to do with this, it was some asshole in the studio who decided to make money out of it and he signed it along with other Sabbath live bootlegs I have, I really would love to meet him again.

Now back to another very special Black Sabbath show august 31st 2016 which is supposed to be ((The last Black Sabbath show in Detroit)) I had another meet and greet package, and this time I brought a gift for the band which was “Glass Coca-Cola Bottles with their names on it” with the help of one of the tour staff a guy named ((Lawrence Montoya AKA Larry Lava)) who helped me getting those bottles to them, along with a 5 sheets letter to TONY IOMMI which I will always be grateful to the guy for his kindness, who told me: I’ll take these from you and pass it on and when you get to take you picture with them I will tell them: This is the Coke guy who brought these bottles as a gift.

When that moment came and I stood in front of them I did the same thing I did back In Feb 19th bowing to them and they remembered me, so I asked the lady taking the picture saying: Can I stand next to Tony?

Come on.. come here, Tony replied to me.

As I stood next to one of my all time idols He kept saying to me: Thank you, thank you, thank you so much I really appreciate this, I was just shaking my head unable to speak, unable to stare at him while the lady kept taking the pictures, then at the end the man offered his hand for a hand shake saying to me: Thanks, I grabbed it super gently with my both hands saying to Him: I am honored sir, thank you, God Bless You sir.
What happened the next day on September 1st was way too much to for me to believe, I was getting my car fixed as I kept getting messages on my Facebook messenger from friends telling me that the Master has publicly thanked me for the gift I gave him. Until this day I feel so hounoured and humble for that which I wasn’t expecting nor did I do it for a recognition or fame if I may say, I simply did it from the heart and for my love to my all time favorite band. Another thing was special about that show and that was, I met another fan from Facebook “David Gadomski” who plays guitar on the Black Sabbath tribute band ((Planet Caraven)) .

In the 90’s, many people discarded vinyl and went in search of the CD. Did you follow the wave or did you snatch pieces that are now considered rarities?

Again I didn’t have a Turntable back then, I didn’t get one until late 2013, so up to late 2013 most of my stuff was CDs.

Have you had the opportunity to buy an album you’ve been looking for some time, and you gave up because of the price, but then you regretted it?

With Black Sabbath I have Few different CDs, LPs, MINI LPs, as you can see in the pictures of my Black Sabbath stuff so 3 to 4 different formats , Genesis & Iron Maiden I have now LPs and CDs

In your collection, do you only own a single version of a particular album or search for multiple versions?

Only the stuff that was available on vinyl when I didn’t have a turntable, for example The Cure’s 2000 album Bloodflowers out of print on vinyl now and when trying to look for it is ridiculously expensive

What was the feeling of being able to talk with the idols of the Sabbath, and at what times did this occur?

It was like a dream come true, when I stood in front of Tony Iommi, the 1st time, My heart was beating like a double base drum, the second time I met him it was the same and he recognized me and he thanked me so much for those coke bottles with his names that I brought to him, and I felt his appreciation in hownglad he was, I simply couldn’t look at him it was like standing in front of a God as he is to those who really know who and what Tony Iommi is.

What Sabbath material you still looking to buy, but did not find it for a fair price?

At the moment I don’t think there is anything that I’m looking for that I missed unless I’m unaware of.

As a Sabbath fan, what is the best and worst era of the band?

Well…To me, I wouldn’t call it a bad era, The original line up stuff is my least favorite, its great stuff still however it’s my least favorite 3 of those albums maybe 4 are kind of flawless , Now anything from Heaven and He’ll all the way to Forbidden and The Devil You Know is perfection to me, my favorite era is the Ronnie James Dio but I also love the Tony Martin era equally, hell even Born Again and 7th star are epic albums. In the end it’s all Good.

What is your thinking about boxes, re-releases and special editions?

Boxes are cool and really nice, especially when they are nicely done like the ones made in Japan, I only wish to see more Black Sabbath boxes related to the other eras to.

Tell us some funny / curious story involving the purchase of an album, a visit to a store, a meeting with a particular artist, in short, something involving music.

Well…The one story at a record store that I will never forget is when Julio Iglesisas 96 album “Tango” was released I went to buy it at a record store, also that time I lost my Black Sabbath TYR copy and so I ended up picking it on the same day from the record store, so when I went to pay for them, the cashier was surprised and looked at me saying : wow…Julio Sabbath!!! what a combination, how can you do this?

Anything else you’d like to tell to our readers?

  1. Really good interview and Allen seems a very nice guy. It’s so cool to see some one from a differente culture to talk about something we really like. It seems that no matter where we are from, we are all the same (with just some little differences 😉

  2. Muito obrigado, pessoal! Obrigado ao Mairon pela ajuda também. And of course, Thnaks to Allen Khamou!

    1. I tried my friend to listen to the Peter Gabriel era just wouldn’t sink in, I only liked the song Watcher of the Sky. Cheers my friend.

      1. “Watcher of the Skies” is from Foxtrot (1972), second best Genesis album for me. The first is, obviously, Selling England by the Pound (1973). Thanks, friend!

TRADUÇÃO: “Watcher of the Skies” é de Foxtrot (1972), segundo melhor álbum do Genesis pra mim. O primeiro é, obviamente, Selling England by the Pound (1973). Obrigado, amigo!
