Você recentemente fez dois projetos, o primeiro é a canção (e vídeo) “So Much More”, de Violet Janine, e o outro é a canção “The Casle of Imagination”, de Magnus Rosén.

1) TR: First of all thanks for the opportunity to interview you. You recently did two projects, the first one is the song (and video) So Much More by Violet Janine and the other one is the song The Castle of Imagination by Magnus Rosén. What can you tell us about these two projects?

TM: They are very different sessions … both of them are people I know … but the Janine one is a song that I wrote for the “Back where I belong” solo album 25 years ago and wasn’t used … and the Magnus Rosen one was a return favour for Magnus performance at a TM show a few years ago. Very different techniques ….. Loved both of them though and It is great to be able to use my voice in so many ways.

2) Not so long ago you also worked with two different artists, Lazy Bonet with the song and video Racing Heart and with Sebastien with the song Lamb of God and also a guest appearance with Sebastien in the Masters of Rock Festival. What can you tell us about these guest appearences and the chance to work with younger artists?

TM: Well I do a LOT of work with younger artists, its a way of giving something BACK to the industry … they get somebody “famous” on their songs and I can give some experience to them … But it HAS to work for my voice … there are just as many that I DONT work with because it doesn’t work …. Doesn’t mean they are not good songs, only that it doesn’t work for MY voice.

3) We can see you in several projects, but the ones in my opinion that we can really see a lot of Tony Martin are Giuntini Project with Aldo Giuntini (II, III and IV), The Cage with Dario Mollo (I, II and The Third Cage) and Silver Horses (self titled). What these projects have that they are so special and unique? We can see another collaborations between you and these three?

TM: No, those are the projects that you associate with Black Sabbath. People try to copy the work that I did with Sabbath and sometimes it comes alive but not very often. Giuntini has the same kind of voice I used but the music is different. CAGE has a much more melodic and experimental thing, technically brilliant. Silver Horses is Zeppelin, blues type stuff that I don’t do very often but it is still my voice…. again it is great to be able to explore these styles.. Only Silver Horses may work more. I don’t see the others making more…. its not impossible.. but it is distant.

4) You have a kind of voice that fits into heavy metal (Black Sabbath), melodic hard rock (The Cage), zeppelin style (Silver Horses) and now a side of your voice that is “new”: duets with female singers (Layla Milou with the song and video My Bloody Valantine and the Violet Janine Project). What side of your voice we didn’t saw? What’s the secret of so much variety in your carreer?

TM: My voice is VERY versatile …. and I love to use it in as many ways as I can … MOST people could if they had the chance… but you MUST have an open mind AND you must have knowledge of the different styles to be able to make it work.

5) Talking about your solo carreer, you released a solo album in 1992 (Back Where I Belong) and 2005 (Scream). The third one is a work in progress. Also with this new album you have plans to write and release a book about your carreer. What can you tell us about these new releases?

TM: Nothing hahahaha!!! … I do intend to release the 3rd solo album but I am always tied up with other things and it usually takes second place…. Something to look forward to.

6) In 2012 you did a very unique show in your home town, Birmingham, with Dario Mollo on guitars, Magnus Rosen on bass, Geoff Nicholls on keys and Danny Needham on drums. Do you intend to start a new tour with this great line up when your new album comes out?

TM: It was an attempt to see what a TM band could look like …. it worked great and the idea was to release the video but unfortunately the sound part of it failed, the digital machine that we used didn’t work so all we have is the sound off the cameras in the room and that sounds shit.!! …. we are working to try and enhance the sound to see if we can recover it but until then it must remain unreleased.

7) Talking about Sabbath and your versatility, you were the only one who sang material from ozzy, dio, hughes and your own material. The only one that is missed here is the gillan material. How you feel to be the only one who sang so much material back in the day? There are a song from your era or another one that you wished to play but didn’t have the chance?

TM: It is a sign of my versatile voice that I was able to sing all those songs … the Gillan stuff never was an option for some reason … no Idea why Iommi chose to miss those out but I would have tried it if they wanted to do it.

10873359_1016013091746136_8805636412519490244_o

8) Another cool fact is that you were the only singer beside Ozzy who sang “Changes” live and I think you did an amazing job on this one. Do you remember the nights you played this song (Asian dates of the Forbidden Tour), the reaction of the crowd, etc?

TM: Well YES I remember because Iommi played PIANO!!!!!! …. Awesome!! … Great to sing and very cool reaction from the crowd.

9) You recently said on your facebook page that if you have the chance in the future, you would like to work on the Forbidden album. What you would change in the original material?

TM: Well I can just hear BETTER melodies for the voice and some of the lyrics were not very TM. So I can hear maybe three of the songs better.

13173423_1339495916064517_6047041695187110567_o

10) Finally, you are an artist with great things accomplished. You worked with Sabbath, Giuntini, Dario Mollo, Rondinelli, Rolf Munkes, and many many more. What you think you haven’t done yet in the music world? What are the expectations for Tony Martin in the near future?

TM: I just want to keep going … and I would LOVE to get my LIVE voice working again .. its a different voice to studio work and my technique needs working on, But my voice still works so its just a case of rehearsals and technique I guess … Anyway it has been a pleasure …

11) Thanks again for this interview, please send a message for your fans in Brazil.

TM: Hi to everyone there … and thanks for your support .. glad you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy doing it.

  1. Excelente!

  3. Cara, muito bom!!! Valeu pela edição, pelas fotos, ficou show Mairon.

    1. The Cage é bom demais, André!!

      1. Headless Cross pra mim é supremo!!! E dos projetos os que mais gosto são giuntini 4, the third cage, the cage e raven ride do empire, além dos trabalhos solo

  8. Yea his live voice has sucked the past ten years. That’s why it was rerecorded for the Sebastien Headless cross live track. Compare the audience film to the proshot clip. It’s so much different.

    1. I saw the two versions of the Headless Cross performance with Sebastien…his fighting to get his live voice in form. I hope that this day comes. I think if he plays with Iommi again, with a lot of training and rehearsals he will get better. Cheers!
