Entrevista: Patrick Djivas e Franz DiCioccio (Premiata Forneria Marconi)

Todos lembramos desses shows com muita alegria.

Franz DiCioccio

Como será a divisão do repertório do show para essas apresentações tão especiais?

FZ: Eu e Patrick escrevemos tanto as letras quanto as músicas.

No álbum PFM In Classic From Mozart A Celebration, há uma bela homenagem a música clássica.

A caixa Marconi Bakery, lançada ano passado, resgatou os álbuns Photos of Ghosts, L’isola di Niente e The World Became The World, mas principalmente, trouxe um CD bônus com muitas raridades.

O raro I Quelli

OBRIGADO!

English Version

In partnership with Progshine, Consultoria do Rock brings you an exclusive interview with Patrick Djivas and Franz Di Cioccio, bassist and drummer, respectively, of the Italian group Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). The Italians will be passing through Brazil next April, with a series of shows (São Paulo – 19, Porto Alegre – 20, Rio de Janeiro – 21, Belo Horizonte – 22).

The founding members of one of the most traditional bands of progressive rock in the 70’s tell a bit about the new album, Emotional Tattoos, as will the shows in our country, and of course, stroll through the remarkable and successful history of his career. Check out the Portuguese (above) and English (below) versions.

First of all, thanks for your attention. It will be the second time of PFM in Brazil at this decade. What memories do you have of the last shows of the group in our country (2014) and what do you expect for the shows that will take place in four cities next April?

Patrick In reality this is the third time. We all remember the shows with great joy. We like Brazilian audiences a lot because in your country music is an irreplaceable life partner. The Brazilians respond to our music with enthusiasm and this means that the concert is transformed every time into a large collective party. We expect the enthusiasm that we know very well

How will the set list be choosed for such special presentations?

Franz The set list is articulated with the execution of pieces that belong to all our repertoire. I call them emotional windows and overlook all our historical periods. There will be pieces from the beginning, the English period, the American one, the experimental season of PFM in Classic and part of the last album Emotional Tattoos. There will also be moments of improvisational freedom that makes the concert always different.

Is it possible that the shows in Brazil are being to be recorded for a later release, whether in video or audio?

PA This we do not know yet. Our management is verifying the possibility of this hypothesis

Recently, the PFM has been presenting the famous albums of the initial phase of the group’s career, which were even released on CD. As the idea of re-creating works such as Storia di Un Minuto, Per Um Amico, L’isola de Niente, arise?

FZ We are fortunate to have a multi generational audience, we play a lot around the world and our repertoire is vast. For this reason we always have new fans who discover PFM, fall in love with our music and go looking for our records. Storia di Un Minuto, Per Um Amico, L’isola di Niente are important records that made the difference at the time of their release. The second and third in the English version entered the ranking in the UK and in the USA in the first 100 Billboard. It was the first time for an Italian non-English band with Mediterranean roots. A great goal that has opened our doors in all countries. For this reason they are also republished in new versions. Il suono del Tempo is a collection that re-presents in a box our first five records. We recorded them in Japan in live version with the original arrangements of the time.

The last album, Emotional Tattos, was released in two formats: one with songs in Italian and another in the special format, with songs in Italian and English. Is this a trend for the group’s next releases?

PA Sure. We have recently signed an international contract with InsideOut (German / world label) and it is natural that our public is wide. The Italian version, however, is not designed only for Italy. In our tours we realized that in the Latin American countries the Italian version is more loved for a fact of sonority because our language is closer to the Latin American idioms. English instead is for the rest of the world. The themes of the lyrics are compatible as inspiration between the two languages, but they are not the translation of each other.

How was the songwriting process for the new album?

FZ Patrick and I have written both the music and the lyrics. For the compositions we worked very well and in great harmony. Patrick, besides being a great bassist, is a researcher of sounds and the arranged arrangements are rich in nuances that range in every musical style. We know each other very well and when I sing a melody he already has in mind how the song will come. For the lyrics it was a similar work. I wrote those Italians and he those in English, a language that knows very well besides Italian and French.

To promote Emotional Tattoos, the video of “Le Lezione” and its English version have been released. How was the process of creating them, and why the choice of that song for a promotional video?

PA We chose it because it is a very dynamic piece, where there is a melody, rhythm, sound experimentation and an arrangingly involved one. The lyric is a reflection on the role of life, which is always the first teacher of our actions. We wanted an ironic video that would represent the band as it is on and off the stage.

The whole album has several moments of admirable listening, but in particular, I really enjoyed the tracks “Il Regno” and “Big Bang”. In particular, with this last song, I am a PhD in Particle Physics, and Physics Teacher as weel. I studied something about the Big Bang. Could you tell us a bit about the history and concept of this track?

FZ I’m glad you like these two songs because they are among our perferits. The concept of Big Bang applied in life as a metaphor. When you decide to change your life, a kind of emotional Big Bang happens; everything shatters and everything starts without schemes, all in freedom

We have also an instrumental track “Freedom Square”. How was the process of creating this song, and what is easier: to create a fully instrumental track or insert lyrics on a melody already finished?

PA We are musicians and it is certainly easier to create instrumental pieces without thinking of a lyric. In this passage the story is already in the expressiveness of the instruments and in their musical interventions. Imagine being in a square talking to friends with their instruments in hand. Thus a jam session is born in which everyone gives his voice.

The cover art of Emotional Tattoos, by Stefano Bonora, brings an interesting concept about “the new musical world of PFM”. Please, explain the main details and characteristics of it.

FZ When we wrote the songs we realized that they were stories that led the listener to expose a new world of PFM, so the best way was to take a spaceship and bring everyone to the discovery of this New Musical World, made of images that we know but also new images. The concept is to discover the emotions we have within us.

Vinyl has come back strongly in recent years, including with PFM making releases in that format. How do you see this return of the vinyl and what are the main attributions that the LP can add to the fans and groups?

PA Vinyl takes you to listen to music more carefully. because gestures and attention to listening return closer to the human emotional sphere. So-called liquid music does not have this charm. Vinyl takes you to dedicate time.

FZ And more time for oneself means better assimilation of emotions, and happiness in listening. It’s a ritual gesture like making a cup of tea. Our LP in Italy went 1st in the LP ranking and this has not happened for a long time. I love vinyl and I think the public is coming back to love it too.

Talking about some of the group’s latest releases, how the idea of creating the instrumental album Stati di immaginazione came about?

PA The idea was of our manager Iaia De Capitani. She knows us very well and knows that if there is a good idea, PFM immediately gets to work. We closed a theater and in a week we composed the music inspired by the short films that she had edited for us.

FZ After so many live we lacked an instrumental album and that was the opportunity to tell with the music, without having the need to sing and write lyrics. A project that renews our expressive freedom without gender conditioning.

In PFM In Classic From Mozart To Celebration, there is a beautiful tribute to classical music. As the idea of this project arose, as well as the process of selecting the compositions for this show.

FZ Another idea of Iaiah that we have married and fulfilled. We are all debtors of the teachings of the great Classical masters. So it seemed nice to do a project that reversed the roles.

PA We imagined doing a jam session with Mozart, Prokofief and all the other musicians we liked. So we arranged and mixed in our themes with theirs. New classical and electric compositions were born at the same time.

The Marconi Bakery box set, released last year, rescued the albums Photos of Ghosts, L’isola di Niente and The World Became The World, but mainly, brought a bonus CD with many rarities. Among them, a version for “21st Century Schizoid Man”, of King Crimson. Tell us about the recording of this song and what were the other bands that served as influences for the initial formation of PFM.

FZ I would say all the good music of that period and the King Crimson in particular. That song was a tribute dedicated to them at the time of our debut. We had just changed the name from Quelli to PFM and we played well executed covers to make ourselves known in that new formation. That tape years later listened to Greg Lake and decided to write us for his new label Manticore.

Here in Brazil, the album I Quelli is revered by several admirers of progressive, just as it is a high value collector’s item. Tell us a little bit about the period in which I Quelli was active, and what it was to develop progressive rock in Italy.

FZ It would be very long to talk about I Quelli because we should dig in the 60s. It is enough to know that the roots were good, they were not progressive but there were excellent musicians, as it then demonstrated the transformation into PFM

What progressive rock bands, or music in general, do you know from Brazil?

PA I state that I love all music and I never do gender discrimination. I really love Brazilian music and its roots.

FZ I love Brazilian music too, but I’m intrigued by extreme bands that overturn their traditions and offer strong material. In the rock area a Brazilian band I knew was I Sepultura for their frequentation of the thrash metal primitive.

Nowadays, it has become a tradition to combine great names from a particular style to unique presentations. An outstanding example is the Big 4 of Thrash Metal, as well as the G3 by Vai, Satriani and Malmsteen. Here at the Consultoria do Rock, we have a section called News that we would like to be Real, and certainly one of them would be a tour of our country joining giants of the Italian prog, like PFM, Le Orme, Locanda …, among others. Would it be possible?

FZ I do not think it is possible. One thing is to put together three or more soloists on one stage, one account is to put together several bands in the same concert. The desire of the fans often does not reflect the artistic reality and personal choices of the bands of the progressive scene. The show of a band is its DNA and this varies a lot from person to person from band to band.

Despite the recent departure of guitarist Franco Mussida, do you still have contact?

FZ – PA We have no contacts. Everyone for himself and God for everyone.

Please send a message to your fans in the country. We are looking forward to

FZ – PA We’ll see you and know that we can not wait to be brazilian for a few days. OBRIGADO!
