Entrevista Exclusiva: Dustin Hill (Black Pussy)

Confira.

3. Temos dois grandes vídeos do novo álbum: “Slice of Paradise” e “Home Sweet Home“.

On Blonde foi nosso primeiro lançamento. Fizemos apenas duas tomadas, pegamos a segunda e lançamos ela.

9. Então, “Galaxies” foi gravada ao vivo. Eu a acho uma baita música. Vocês ainda a fazem nos shows?

Amamos arte e queríamos dar as pessoas algo especial e limitado.

A versão transparente de On Blonde

Tocamos no Desert Fest London e Berlin. Foi incrível. Nada de negativa para dizer sobre isto. Estou louco para voltar.

English version

One of the great bands of the present time in the American scene, and that little by little has been cited as reference of good music in the whole world, is the group of Portland, Oregon, Black Pussy. The group released its third full lenght in May, and has been touring the United States for the past several months. During the tour, vocalist and guitarist Dustin Hill gave us this interview, commenting on the current moment of the band, some controversies that the name Black Pussy caused in the ever conservative country of North America, and more. Check it.

1. Hello Dustin, thank for this interview. I wish first to talk about the promotion of the new album, Power. You have a busy schedule in last months, with shows in all USA. How have been the receptivity of your fans to the new songs?

Yeah the tour has been super busy in support of the Power album hence why it’s taken awhile to write this interview. It gets psychedelic out here in the spaceship. So far the fans have been really digging the new tunes. I really couldn’t ask for a better reception.

2. How were the main moments of the Power record process that you can talk to us?

The tracking of Power went really smooth compatibly. I put a lot more time into pre-production this go around to be able to focus on tones vs parts in the studio which enabled me to take more of a producer roll. Some of main things for this record were just testing all different kinds of instruments and mix ideas.

3. We have two great videos from the new album: “Slice of Paradise” and “Home Sweet Home”. Tell us about the history of these videos, and why do you choose these songs to make a promotional video-clips.

We have a brand new video for Parasols right now; Which we’re super stoked on featuring Nathan Barnatt. As for the first two releases those are songs we were just stoked on getting out.

4. You are in the third full lenght. Tell us about the feeling of reach it – and some EPs – in this time, where music seems to be lost its value, in the sense that mostly of people, in general, don’t stop to listen it. Only have music as a background to do other things.

I feel blessed that I’ve been able to write this many albums or should I say I’m blessed that the gods send them my way. We’re just artist so we try not to be concerned if people are listening now, we just want to make the art. If people end up caring about it cool; and if they don’t, it really doesn’t matter as long as we’re doing it. Life is short do thy destiny.

5. Black Pussy is a band that here, in Brazil, is beginning to conquer its space. Please, tell us about the first days of band.

Well in the early days it was just me with an idea. I’ve been lucky enough to find a team that wants to be apart of the struggle. Really we’ve held to the same idea the whole time and that is to try and make the best art we can; and tour as much as possible.

6. In our country, we had some information, by internet, about Black Pussy’s troubles, because of the name of the band. Is it truth?

Yeah there has been a little controversy. It just seems to be the way of the world at the moment or maybe it’s always been like this in rock n’ roll. Either way we’re not caving to these people, they don’t belong in rock n’ roll.

7. I believe that you have been took the correct attitude in keeping the name. With so many absurdities happening in the world today, people worrying about something as futile as that is stupid. Congratulations! However, if is possible, I wish would honestly like to hear from you an opinion about the polemical Kristy Love text, made two years ago criticizing strongly the band

To get to deep into her bullshit article is a waste of time. It’s all click bait nonsense. We’ve been on the road for 5 years straight and have 5 albums out under this band name. It’s only about the music and having a good time with everybody.

The First EP, Galaxies

8. Let’s talk about your first EP, with an only song, “Galaxies”. An incredible musical piece with 22 minutes, that brings memories of great psychedelic songs from the seventies. How was the creation of this song?

On Blonde was the first release. Galaxies was just another art project we wanted to do, there are no rules in art. It came together pretty quick and was recorded live. We only did 2 take and kept the second and pressed it.

9. So, “Galaxies” was caught in the act. I think that it is a great song. Do you still made it live?

We play it live every once in awhile when people won’t let us get off stage. It’s always a great night when it happens.

10. I like so much when Black Pussy dives in psychedelic ways, remembering classical bands like Hawkwind or Blue Oyster Cult, but making and innovative mix, with something like Monster Magnet. Which are the main influences of Black Pussy’s musicians?

The bands you mentioned are all influences. It’s defiantly a mixing of genres we do, but always keeping a hint of that late 60’s psychedelic in the ingredients. Syd Barrett is a huge influence for me, the pop hooks with the psychedelic.

The Red version of Where The Eagle Flies‘ EP

11. On Blonde and Magic Mustache, the two first full length, bring memories from grunge and alternative rock, very different that “Galaxies”. Why you decide to change the sounds of the band?

With this project one of the main things is there are no rule. We do what we feel at the moment and put it out.

12. The Eps “Galaxies” and the “Where the Eagle Flies” were released as vinyl, since that the last one is a beautiful red version. On Blonde was released in an awesome clear vinyl, and Power is being released in a CLEAR PURPLE VINYL version very dizzying. Why do you choose to do these releases?

We love art and we want to give people something special and limited. All our color releases are limited runs and when they are gone, they are gone forever. Then we do a new color for the next pressing. It’s a way of truly knowing you have a first edition. On Blondes first run was 180 gram black vinyl and the clear is the second run limited to a 1000 with a different color cover as well. It’s always about the art for us.

13. What is your opinion about the spreading of songs by internet, either through torrents or through download’s blogs?

Take it! If people are listening, I really don’t care how.

The Red Orange Version of Magic Mustache

14. Do you have some opportunity to play in Europe? In a positive case, how was the experience? In negative case, is there some expectations to do it?

We just did a euro tour. We played Desert Fest London and Berlin. It was awesome. Nothing negative to say about it. Can’t wait to head back.

15. And about Brazil, what do you know from our music?

I know some of the metal bands quite well and have been down the samba rabbit hole. But I know there’s a lot I’m missing. I’d love to tour down there or just come hang for a couple of weeks to soak some up.

16. What is the next steps from Black Pussy’s career, and what is the great dream, as musicians, of all members band?

Always the same for us, writing, recording and touring. We are living the dream fully. The great dream is to tour the world.

17. Please, send a message to your fans here in Brazil, and again, thank you for your attention

It’s pretty sweet we have fans in Brazil, which means we need to get a tour going down there so we can party. We appreciate all the support which drives us to stay true to rock n’ roll no matter what. Hope to hang soon.
